25th Century Aphrodite (1984) is an example of the digital Pop Art imagery Andrew was creating in the 1980s. Using a one-of-a-kind $150,000 computer graphics system as a student at New York's School of Visual Arts, he scanned a black-and-white portrait of a lovely girl, converting it from analog to digital. He then used the computer's limited set of just 16 colors to assign a separate color to each of the photograph's shades of grey. The rendering process took a very long time, and every so often the screen displayed a transitional image such as this one. The previous image was fading out as a new one was coming in. Every time Andrew liked what he saw on the screen, he was able to use a foot-switch to trigger an analog camera and generate an Ektachrome transparency. These accidental transitional images became Andrew's favorite slides from the month-long course at SVA. He has now scanned some of those 40-year-old transparencies, and is making prints available for the first time.
